Moving During Rainy Season in Kenya: Protect Your Belongings

Kenya’s rainy season adds extra challenges to a move—water, slippery surfaces and traffic delays are all risks. With preparation you can minimise damage and keep the schedule on track.

Weather-proof packing

Wrap boxes in plastic liners and cover furniture with tarpaulins to keep moisture out. Use sealed containers for important documents and electronics, and keep towels or absorbent cloths handy for unexpected leaks.

Plan for delays

Allow extra time in your schedule for slower loading/unloading due to wet conditions and increased traffic. Plan an earlier start and check weather forecasts the day before to confirm your moving window.

Protect flooring and walls

At both the old and new properties, place protective sheets on floors and run traffic paths with plastic to avoid mud and water being tracked inside.

If possible, book a covered vehicle or tarpaulin-equipped truck. Confirm with the mover what contingency plans they have for severe weather, including rescheduling and covered storage options.

Finally, keep a phone list of moving team contacts and a small emergency kit (torch, waterproof gloves, extra tarpaulin) to handle small problems on the day.
